Best Beginner Pickleball Drills to Practice at Home

Beginner Pickleball Drills to Practice at Home

The fastest way to improve at pickleball is to get on the court with a coach โ€” but there's a lot you can practice at home between lessons. These simple beginner drills build the foundational skills that make everything else easier: paddle control, hand-eye coordination, consistency, and feel for the ball. None of them require a court, and most need nothing more than a paddle, a ball, and a little space.

1. The Bounce and Catch (Paddle Control)

This is the most basic drill and a great place to start. Hold your paddle flat and bounce the ball straight up in the air, trying to keep it going as long as possible. Count your consecutive hits. Once you're comfortable, try alternating the face of the paddle (forehand side, then backhand side) with each bounce. This builds paddle control and a soft, relaxed touch โ€” the foundation of everything in pickleball.

2. Wall Bounces (Consistency and Reaction)

Find a smooth wall (garage, basement, or even a large fence outside) and gently hit the ball against it, letting it bounce once before hitting it again. Start slow and focus on keeping the ball in a rhythm. This drill builds consistency, reaction time, and the ability to control your shots โ€” all essential for rallies. Try to hit 50 in a row without losing control.

3. The Dink Tap (Soft Touch)

Dinking โ€” hitting soft shots into the kitchen โ€” is one of the most important skills in pickleball. You can practice the motion at home even without a net. Stand a few feet from a wall and gently tap the ball so it would land softly just over an imaginary net. Focus on a loose grip, a short backswing, and letting the paddle do the work. The goal is control, not power.

4. Shadow Swings (Form and Muscle Memory)

You don't even need a ball for this one. Practice your swing motion slowly and deliberately โ€” forehand, backhand, and the serve. Focus on your grip, your stance, your shoulder turn, and your follow-through. Doing this in front of a mirror helps you see your form. Good muscle memory built at home translates directly to better shots on the court.

5. Toss and Serve (Serve Practice)

The serve is the one shot you hit every single point, so it's worth practicing. Even without a court, you can practice your toss and swing motion. Toss the ball gently, step forward, and swing underhand, focusing on a smooth, controlled motion. Aim for a consistent toss height and contact point. Repetition here builds a reliable serve you can count on.

6. Footwork Shuffle (Agility)

Pickleball requires quick lateral movement. Practice shuffling side to side in your athletic stance โ€” knees bent, weight on the balls of your feet. Move left, then right, staying low and balanced. Add a small hop (a split step) as if reacting to an imaginary shot. Good footwork is what lets you get to the ball in position to hit a good shot, and you can build it anywhere.

Tips for Practicing at Home

  • Practice a little every day โ€” 10โ€“15 minutes of focused drills beats one long session a week.
  • Focus on one skill at a time rather than rushing through all of them.
  • Keep your grip relaxed โ€” tension is the enemy of good touch.
  • Use a real pickleball (not a tennis ball) so the bounce and feel match what you'll experience on the court.
  • Don't worry about power โ€” at home, it's all about control and consistency.
